The sportive scene is growing in Portugal and we have some places available for the “Aldeias do Xisto” Sportive, held on September 13th, near Coimbra in central/northern Portugal.
There are two options, the full sportive of 168kms with 4100 metres of total climbs, or the half option of 95kms, with 2000m of total climbs.
Either option is no walk in the park and the event is run with controlled traffic, so the roads are not completely closed all day, but they are closed to let the riders come through. The Lousa mountain range where the majority of the riding takes place is breathtakingly beautiful and as well as the stunning scenery and challenging climbs, enjoys excellent road surfaces and some delightful historic villages to ride through.
The package that we offer is a 3 day or 5 day option and you get to stay in a beautiful hotel (the 4 star Quinta das Lágrimas) and included are:
Registration on the Schist Villages Granfondo Cycle Sportive (Granfondo or MedioFondo distance);
- Transfers from/to Hotel to the start of the competition and to/from all experiences during your stay;
- 2 or 4 nights in 4 star “Quinta das Lágrimas Hotel”, in double room, with breakfast included and free access to the SPA;
- Private briefing, on the day before the event, by experienced local riders;
- Mechanical support before the race, with bike fit and bike assembly;
- Nutrition and hydration during all bike rides;
- Post race massage;
- Guided bike rides in the Coimbra region
- Gourmet group dinner (for the 5 day experience only, drinks not included)
The cost is €740 for the 3 day option and €1090 for the 5 day option, with discounts available for larger groups. If you are flying, you should to either Porto or Lisbon airports, both of which are less than two hours from Coimbra where the hotel is.
As an option we can also include airport transfer (€120) and bike hire (€45 per day, for Scott Addict 20 or similar)

We are currently working on a truly epic ride of around 1,550 kms (1,000 miles) from Porto in northern Portugal then into northern Spain along the northern coast and over the Pyrenees into France, through Andorra and down to Barcelona over 15 days. It will include some of the most famous climbs in the Pyrenees as well as the most stunning scenery that northern Portugal/Spain has to offer. This is a European cycling holiday like no other and will take place over 15 days, with full support (using pro or ex pro riders as guides and van support); 3 and 4 star hotels; good quality food; 2 rest days and touristic opportunities to take in the local culture. Daily distances vary between 90kms and 150kms (55 to 95 miles)
We need minimum groups of 10 (maximum 22) to make the ride viable and you would need to fly in to Porto, Lisbon or Vigo and out of Barcelona. The cost will be €2300 per rider including 15 days twin accommodation, breakfasts, evening meals and on the road snacks. We strongly recommend you bring your own bike, but bike hire is optional at €25 a day. We will soon be publishing some more information, but if you are interested in the bike ride of a lifetime, please email Charlie at firstname.lastname@example.org and we can send some more information. If you have a group of 10 or more riders, then we can go according to your schedule, but we will also be publishing at least one fixed date trip in the Summer that anyone can sign up to.

The Algarve in southern Portugal is statistically the sunniest place in Europe, so for that reason alone, it is a great place to ride your bike off-season. Add to this the fact that there are some really challenging climbs (like the 902m up to Foia – view pictured below!), empty well-surfaced roads once you get away from the coast and fantastic value for money for food and accommodation.
To get to the Algarve, you should fly in to Faro – after that we will look after everything, including airport pick-up, bike set-up, vehicle support with a professional mechanic, ex-pro guides to ride with and fantastic accommodation (such as Vila Monte and Vale d’El Rei). Most people know the Algarve for the beaches and the strip of land alongside them, packed with tourists and endless hotels, but once you go a few kilometers inland and over to the West coast, it is completely different with rugged scenery and nobody to bother you.
We are able to offer a variety of difficulties of routes for Winter cycling training holidays, depending on what your group is looking for, so please contact us if you would like to find out more.
The interior of Portugal has to be one of the best places to ride a bike in Europe – you get fantastic weather, empty good quality roads, stunning scenery, challenging routes and the costs of accommodation and food are generally much lower than other Western European countries. At Carvalho Bike Tours we are passionated about riding our bikes and we want to spread the gospel about what a great cycling country Portugal is. So come over and see us and we will treat you like royalty so that you can have the cycling holiday of a lifetime!
