Carvalho Bike Tours is a sister company to Carvalho Custom, which is one of Europe’s leading suppliers of custom cycling and triathlon kit (made in Portugal and sold directly to clubs round the world). We set up the Bike Tours because we have always had friends of the company come over to Portugal to come cycling and so many of them have asked us to set up a bike tour company.
Fernando Carvalho who originally set up Carvalho Custom with a Brit, Charlie Cutler, was Portugal’s leading cyclist in the late 1980s and early 1990s. Fernando’s brother, Alberto is also an ex-pro and spent years as a pro-team mechanic – he is now the lead mechanic for Carvalho Bike Tours.
The philosophy of Carvalho Bike Tours is to cater for committed cyclists who want to do some tough cycling, but to be well looked after on the bike and then to relax in style. A lot of bike tour companies offer a more basic service than us, but because Portugal is such a low-cost country, we are able to offer a premium cycling holiday at reasonable rates.
Our aim at Carvalho Bike Tours is to take the strain for you, so that you can focus on riding hard and then relaxing. So we include in our prices:
Airport pick-up/drop off
Bike set up (if you bring your own)
Breakfast, snacks and energy drinks
Vehicle support with a qualified mechanic
Cycling guide (an ex-pro)
Bike maintenance and cleaning
We don’t include lunch and dinner, although we will take you to a restaurant to eat at night and typically are snacks and a café stop are enough to keep riders going during the day.
We also have available bike hire, at €140 a week.
The accommodation that we use is all three or four star and is generally in manor houses or similar historic buildings, so that our clients can get a flavour of the best that Portugal has to offer.
